Scientists Develop Powerful New Animal Model for Metastatic Prostate Cancer
Scientists have developed a new method to rapidly create much better mouse models for metastatic prostate cancer. This discovery allows scientists to investigate the causes of the disease while at the same time testing new therapeutics to treat it. [Press release from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory discussing online prepublication in Cancer Discovery] Press Release | Abstract

Atorvastatin Prevents ATP-Driven Invasiveness via P2X7 and EHBP1 Signaling in PTEN-Expressing Prostate Cancer Cells
Researchers document an involvement of EH domain binding protein 1 (EHBP1), previously associated with aggressive prostate cancer and insulin-stimulated trafficking and cell migration, in P2X7 signaling. They also showed that EHBP1 is essential for an anti-invasive effect of atorvastatin. [Carcinogenesis] Abstract

RANK- and C-Met-Mediated Signal Network Promotes Prostate Cancer Metastatic Colonization
Researchers report that receptor activator of NF-?B ligand (RANKL) expressed by prostate cancer cells consistently induced colonization or metastasis to bone in animal models. [Endocr Relat Cancer]

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts-Secreted Annexin A1 Induces Prostate Cancer Cells to Gain Stem Cell-Like Features
A role for Annexin A1 in prostate adenocarcinoma was determined using primary cultures and a tumor cell line, all derived from the conditional Pten deletion mouse model of prostate cancer. [Mol Cancer Res] Abstract

Probing Hypoxia-Induced Staurosporine Resistance in Prostate Cancer Cells with a Microfluidic Culture System
A microfluidic system for cell culture and drug response studies was developed to elucidate the effects of hypoxia on drug susceptibility. Drug response studies were performed in prostate cancer cells and Ramos B cells under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. [Analyst] Abstract

Effects of Sulforaphane and 3,3′-Diindolylmethane on Genome-Wide Promoter Methylation in Normal Prostate Epithelial Cells and Prostate Cancer Cells
Both sulforaphane and 3,3′-diindolylmethane treatment decreased DNA methyltransferase expression in normal prostate epithelial cells, and androgen-dependent and androgen-independent prostate cancer cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

Nrf1 and Nrf2 Transcription Factors Regulate Androgen Receptor Transactivation in Prostate Cancer Cells
Scientists investigated the roles of Nrf1 and Nrf2, transcription factors that regulate antioxidant gene expression, on hormone-mediated androgen receptor transactivation using a syngeneic in vitro model of androgen dependent and castration resistant prostate cancer cells. [PLoS One] Full Article

A D-Amino Acid Containing Peptide as a Potent, Noncovalent Inhibitor of a5ß1 Integrin in Human Prostate Cancer Invasion and Lung Colonization
Researchers report that D-stereoisomer replacement of histidine and cysteine in PHSCN produces a highly potent derivative, Ac-PhScN-NH2 (PhScN). PhScN was 27,000- to 150,000-fold more potent as an inhibitor of basement membrane invasion by DU 145 and PC-3 prostate cancer cells. [Clin Exp Metastasis] Abstract

MicroRNA-30c Serves as an Independent Biochemical Recurrence Predictor and Potential Tumor Suppressor for Prostate Cancer
The potential role of microRNA-30c (miR-30c) in tumorigenesis of prostate cancer (PCa) cells was evaluated by in vitro cell assays. MiR-30c was significantly down-regulated in PCa tissues and cells compared with the corresponding controls. [Mol Biol Rep] Abstract

Clinical Variables Associated with PSA Response to Abiraterone Acetate in Patients with Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer
Investigators retrospectively identified factors associated with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response to abiraterone and validate them in an independent cohort. [Ann Oncol] Abstract

Circulatory miR-628-5p Is Downregulated in Prostate Cancer Patients
Scientists aimed to identify potential circulatory microRNAs (miRNAs) that can provide insights into new mechanisms for clinical diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) and can serve as potential biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets. Candidate serum miRNAs were detected by using PCR microarray in a learning set of six African American and six Caucasian American PCa patients. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

Immunotherapy for Prostate Cancer: Recent Developments and Future Challenges
The authors review some of the recent advances in immunotherapy as related to the treatment of prostate cancer and outline some of the challenges that lie ahead. [Cancer Metastasis Rev] Abstract

$1 Million Movember-Prostate Cancer Foundation Challenge Award Will Fund City of Hope Immunotherapy Research
A team of City of Hope researchers has received a two-year, $1 million Movember-Prostate Cancer Foundation Challenge Award for a double-armed project to treat advanced prostate cancer. The team will be studying two novel agents’ promising ability to stage a combined immunotherapeutic attack against prostate cancer cells, which have previously been resistant to such an effort. [BusinessWire] Press Release

Minister Sherlock Opens Ireland’s First Human Use Stem Cell Manufacturing Facility at NUI Galway
The Centre for Cell Manufacturing Ireland at National University of Ireland Galway is the first ever facility on the island of Ireland to receive a license from the Irish Medicines Board to manufacture culture-expanded stem cells for human use.
